Alliance & Leicester is thought to be in talks with Spain's biggest bank Banco Santander after rejecting an offer from French bank Credit Agricole. It was reported last Friday in the newspaper City AM that the Spanish bank had made an offer of more than 6.5bn. A&L chief executive Richard Pym is reported to have indicated to potential suitors that 6.7bn would be enough to buy the company.
