A&L unsecured loans show fall

Alliance & Leicester's half-year results show unsecured personal loan gross advances were £1.1bn, 24% lower than in the same period in 2005. A&L says this reflects tighter credit criteria and a reduction of the unsecured market. On the mortgage side it completed £160bn of gross lending, 27% higher than in the same period in 2005.

Bank of Scotland says it is looking at offering a retention strategy but nothing will be decided until the start of next year. Charles Haresnape, managing director at Bank of Scotland Mortgages, says it has not yet made any plans to offer a retention fee but is watching with interest Halifax's strategy. He says: "We will be meeting at the start of next year to discuss offering a retention strategy."

Kent Reliance has increased it's staff in India and will set up a second international site soon.Kent Reliance says the number of staff now based in Bangalore is almost equal to those in the UK. Easiprocess, the firm's Indian subsidiary, employs some 40 staff in Bangalore compared with 46 in Chatham.

It has been standard for MPPI providers to include the clause that give them the right to withdraw without being required to give a reason. But bestinsurance.co.uk has dispensed with the practice for its new product launched this month on the grounds that it is unfair on the consumer.
