Business failure levels increase by 3.5%

Equifax says figures up to July 2006 show that overall 3.5% more businesses failed from January to July 2006, than in January to July 2005. It also reveals that UK businesses struggle to obtain new finance with nearly 3% rise in zero credit limits. The retail sector appears to be faring worst at 14%, with transport and communications showing a 6% increase in failures and construction 4%.

Swaps surged last week. The shorter rates increased by almost the full 0.25% increase of the previous week's base rate. While I had been expecting them to increase slightly, I thought markets had already priced the increase into swaps, as a base rate increase had been expected. With the base rate at 4.50%, having swaps at 5% seemed to show that this was the case.

MBS to reduce member charges

Mortgage Broking Services is to reduce its member charges from October 1. Most regulated mortgages will now have a 40 charge and for insurance contracts there will be a charge of 10% of commission generated.
